Lab Work

All these measurements required extremely high accuracy and precision. We’re constantly working to improve measurement techniques and the underlying physical chemistry that drives our understanding of the ocean and how it works.

Recent work shows there’s room for improvement! The lab is currently working to improve the highly precise pH measurements required to study ocean acidification. Woosley is also a member of the working group Ocean Carbonate System Intercomparison Forum, which is working to improve carbon system measurements.

The lab doesn’t only do carbon. Salinity along with temperature is an important variable in determining the ocean’s thermohaline circulation. In 2019, Woosley became a member of the Joint Committee on the Properties of Seawater which developed the Thermodynamic Equation of Seawater – 2010.
