Ryan Woosley [Principal Research Scientist]

Ryan’s interest in the ocean started as a freshman in high school when he took an oceanography field trip to San Diego, CA. Inspired by both chemistry and the ocean he pursued a bachelor’s degree in chemical oceanography at Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne, FL. There his interest in physical chemistry and the impacts of human activities (carbon dioxide emissions) on the oceans blossomed and inspired him to begin graduate studies at the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (University of Miami) in the laboratory of Frank Millero. At RSMAS he specialized in the marine inorganic carbon system and minor components of seawater. After earning his Ph.D. in Marine and Atmospheric Chemistry in 2012 he continued as a Post Doctoral Associate and then Assistant Scientist in Frank Millero’s laboratory studying decadal scale ocean acidification. After 10 years at the University of Miami he began his own laboratory at MIT in 2018.

His favorite pastimes include traveling to exotic locations with his partner, trying local cuisines, and enjoying a drag brunch.

Jiyoung Moon [Post Doctoral Associate]

Jiyoung Moon is a marine chemist and biogeochemist. She joined the Woosley lab as a Postdoctoral Associate in June 2022. She has long-term interests in human perturbations on the Earth and marine environment. It became a momentum for her doctoral studies delineating the impact of anthropogenic nutrients on the change of stoichiometric balance between nitrogen and phosphorus in coastal seas during recent decades. To perform the research, she applied analytical chemistry methods, analyzed data using MATLAB, and participated in a one-month cruise in the North Pacific Ocean and a two-week cruise in the East China Sea. Her main research focus in the Woosley lab is to quantify the rate of ocean acidification and anthropogenic carbon storage in the South Pacific and Antarctic oceans. To do so, she is collecting seawater samples on a GEOTRACES cruise and analyzes inorganic carbon parameters.

On weekends, she likes sightseeing around Greater Boston Area with her husband. She also likes to play the jazz piano.
